After a two year hiatus the classic stadiums in MLB the Show have returned for the first time on PS4. The last time we had access to historic ballparks was MLB The Show 13 with the last generation game on PS3. For this year Sony San Diego opted to only bring back the “true” six classic stadiums: Shibe Park, Crosley Field, Sportman’s Park, Forbes Field, The Polo Grounds and Griffith Stadium. The stadiums left behind were Old Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome and the often name changing Sun Life Stadium (aka Joe Robbie Stadium, aka Pro Player Park aka Pro Player Stadium aka Dolphins Stadium aka Land Shark Stadium).
In this year’s release of MLB 16 The Show, either by accident or not, you can “escape” some of the stadiums and explore the surrounding neighborhood. For the classic stadiums you can do so at Forbes Field and walk around historic Pittsburgh at the turn of the century. I made a two minute video with the Inception music as an overlay because it looks like a dream world. There are also some screenshots below in the Forbes Field section that show you the intricate details that MLB the Show put into building the Steel City. Quite amazing actually.
Below is a comparison of each of the stadiums from MLB 16 The Show versus MLB The Show 13 to see what updates were made. Some details are quite noticeable like the advertisements on the fences at Griffith Stadium are missing in MLB 16 while they are prevalent and at the forefront in MLB 13. This year’s version added monument plaques to the center field area at the Polo Grounds that had been missing in previous generations. The infamous “Always Buy The Show…It’s a Hit” spiff on a cigarette advertisement is alive and well at the Polo Grounds so don’t worry it’s still there. Overall a job well done for MLB 16 the Show. I’m glad they brought back this feature, the game felt lacking without it. I doubt going forward additional stadiums will be added but I think it’s a great aspect of the game to appreciate the history of baseball.
If I were to have 5 additional stadiums I would add: Astrodome, Ebbets Field, Hilltop Park, Jack Murphy Stadium and Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
