The official Major League Baseball All-Stars have been selected and the results make this a glorified Red Sox vs. Cubs game played at Petco Park in San Diego. The entire National League starting infield is comprised of Chicago Cubs: Rizzo, Zobrist, Russell and Bryant going around the horn. They become the second team ever to do so along with the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals. In total 7 Cubs were selected (Folwer, Arrieta, Lester) and that’s hard to argue given the Cubs major league best 52-31 record. Similarly on the American League side the Red Sox placed six players on the All-Star team highlighted by Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and of course Big Papi David Ortiz. Here are the 2016 All-Star roster selections.

As with recent tradition, 15th edition, there is a fan vote to determine who the final All-Star slot goes to in both leagues. A pairing of five players from each side get a 92 hour window to campaign (or not) on why they are the most deserving player to make the final roster. The AL vote comes down to: Ian Kinsler, Evan Longoria, Dustin Pedroia, Michael Saunders and George Springer. The NL side consists of: Brandon Belt, Ryan Braun, Jake Lamb, Starling Marte and Trevor Story. Three players that I included on my teams Springer, Marte and Braun are all in the final vote and my ballot will go to Springer and Marte.

Overall I don’t have many issues with who was actually selected to the All-Star game. Remember this is a glorified popularity contest for the starters. My selections are below and my format differs slightly from what was used in the official process. I ignored the Designated Hitter in the American League and instead of filling out an entire roster, I split my groups into Starters and Reserves with 8 position players in each, 3 starting pitchers in each and 1 closer for each group. Again the teams are nearly identical, my biggest gripe would be the entire Cubs starting line-up as the infield. While Ben Zobrist has had a great year Daniel Murphy has had a better one. At shortstop I didn’t even have Addison Russell on the squad, I think that honor should belong to Corey Seager.
