The summer transfer window closes in week and my patience has now turned to anxiety as I wait for Chelsea to lock down some of these lofty rumors. The newest and most exciting rumor has the Blues making a legitimate run at Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez. I’ve read numerous reports that Chelsea submitted a £60 million offer but negotiations were on going. Neither Real Madrid nor James Rodriguez have publicly stated their stance on whether they’d prefer the Colombian phenom to stay or go. Rodriguez was on the bench for Real Madrid’s La Liga opener against Real Sociedad despite Los Blancos playing without starters Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema or Luka Modric.
So take away what you will from that. Seems like Real Madrid is telling him to find a new home or be content riding the bench. As much as I’d love to have his name and talent on our squad with a price tag like that is it worth it? We already have Cesc Fabregas and Oscar, is this really a good use of money for yet another midfielder? His creativity and scoring ability is fun to think about paired with Hazard, Costa and Willian but in all seriousness we need a center back more than anything else.
If John Terry or Gary Cahill go down who exactly is going to fill that void? Even Cahill starting has me uneasy based on his performances from last year. Branislav Ivanovic can fill in centrally in a pinch and we’ve seen Kurt Zouma do it as well but neither would better than spending some good money on someone like Bonucci or Chiellini from Juventus or Koulibaly from Napoli. James will surely be the splash to compete with Manchester United’s signing of Ibrahimovic & Pogba in the headlines but signing a world class central defender will be the move to tactically compete on the field.
